The PROSOL project
Neurological diseases E-learning platform
As part of the European cross-border cooperation programme, ALCOTRA (Latin Alps TRAnsborder COoperation), the general aim of which is to improve the quality of life of populations, the Piedmont region in Italy and Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur (MNCA) in France have established a joined up thematic plan (PITEM), called “PROSOL” short for PROximity and SOLidarity.
The aim of the PROSOL PITEM strategy is to develop new support and health services aimed at underserved communities in rural and mountainous areas on the France/Italy border in the Southern Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur, Liguria, Piedmont and Aosta Valley regions.
The partnership has identified the importance of solidarity in rural areas and the lack of, and barriers to accessing, specialist care for 3 underserved groups: Senior citizens, Women and Young people. The plan is based on four projects as a response to these challenges:

The Nice University Hospital is implementing the “WE-PRO” project with the aim of rolling out a telemedicine platform for the treatment of neurodevelopmental, neuromuscular, neurogenetic and neurodegenerative diseases. In parallel, this website has been rolled out to enable patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals across the region, whether in practice or in training, to access e-learning courses focussed on the treatment of these diseases. Its measures fall within the scope of the projects “SENIOR CITIZENS”, “WOMEN” AND “YOUNG PEOPLE”.
The aim will be to trial this platform among target groups, and more specifically, those living in rural and mountainous regions in the Nice hinterland, to offer doctors and healthcare professionals within these areas access to training on the treatment of these diseases and to offer training for university hospitals, patients and their caregivers.
The Reference Centre for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases (CRMR) at the Nice University Hospital, under the direction of Professor Sabrina Sacconi, is currently coordinating the roll-out of telemedicine for the treatment of these patients. In the first instance, this project is part of a clinical research project aimed at assessing the technical feasibility of the use of such a tool in the treatment of neuromuscular and neurodevelopment pathologies and neurodevelopmental disorders.
For this research, the CRMR has joined forces with the Memory Resource and Research Centre (CMRR) of Institute Claude Pompidou in Nice, for the treatment of patients with neurodegenerative illnesses, mainly those suffering from Alzheimer's, and the Lenval Paediatric Psychiatry Department, particularly the Autism Resource Centre (CRA), for the treatment of patients with neurodevelopmental disorders.
These expert centres wish to trial teleconsultations for patients living in rural or mountainous areas in Alpes-Maritimes and/or near Digne-les-Bains.
Through this platform, patients can attend appointments with their specialist consultant directly from home or, if they prefer, via their closest local partner organisation. The partner organisations are as follows:

The “ProSol” project also includes an e-learning strand aimed at developing training and information resources to provide patients and their caregivers on the one hand, and healthcare professionals in the aforementioned regions, on the other, with access to content of a high standard approved by renowned experts.
The aim is to improve and digitalise existing training materials in a modular format and produce certain materials with a view to facilitating learning and offer learners guidance on the courses. The training includes self-assessment of learning in the form of quizzes comprising mainly multiple choice questions.
On the one hand, it is intended to give (the) the patient and/or caregiver patient and/or caregiver more knowledge: relating to the specific nature of the condition, assessment criteria and treatment to afford patients and caregivers as much autonomy as possible and involve them in their treatment.
On the other hand, in the case of healthcare professionals, the aim is to give them additional training on the specific treatment of these rare diseases that are sometimes misunderstood.
There is a particular focus on groups in the hinterland of the Alpes-Maritimes and Corsica, where access to treatment is sometimes limited.
